Everyone has their summer rituals that they follow in accordance to maintaining their homes and reducing their summer energy costs. I just wanted to create a small list of things that I do to get ready as well. Of course this list is not extensive but I'm going to list the 12 I have found to be the most important. Now that the temperature is on the rise, it's finally time to enjoy some nice warm weather. But let get your home ready for season before the fun begins. Doing this now could prevent expensive home repairs as well as create additional energy savings on the backend. Below are some summer tips to help you prepare.
Inspect the attic and check for any roof leaks. Fixing finding roof leaks early will save you tons in repairs. It's best to find it early and get an inexpensive patch instead of having to have your roof, and well as insulation, flooring, and etc repaired because you over overlooked a simple leak. Also be sure to check the insulation, as this could raise your or lower your electric bill significantly.
Clean ceiling light fixtures and chandeliers. Don't clog your main lighting source. Dirty fixture produce dull and unfocused lighting in your home.
Clean windows covering , blinds and draperies. Looking through a clean window could make all the difference in the way you feel about your home. I recommend adding lighter drapes and lightly tinting your windows for added comfort.
Replace all air filters. I would recommend getting washable home furnace/HVAC filters as they can be cleaned and reused. Best of all, they only require replacement every few years, saving you money in the long run.
Sweep entrances and replace doormats from winter wear. Its summer time, so sweep away those winter cobwebs and add some beautiful flowering around your door to show off you amazing summer personality.
Switch direction of ceiling fans to counterclockwise. Setting the ceiling fans in counterclockwise motion will all them to push cool air down to the floor causing the room to feel cool without affecting the room temperature. In return, you would not have to lower your thermostat to maintain comfort.
Pressure was the house. Having a gorgeous outside is just as important as the inside of your home. Pressure washing will get all the dirt and grime from the winter months off for a beautiful summer viewing. Also touching the paint would be a great suggestion depending on the age of your home.
Check the dryer exhaust pipe. The dryer exhaust pipe can potentially be a fire hazard. It is also one of the most commonly overlooked summer chore. Remember you home is your investment, there is no need to let cotton and lent take it away from you. Check the exhaust pipe a few times during the summer months.
Pressure was the deck to remove mildew and grime. Pressure washing your deck and adding a coat of RainX wood protector will keep the rainy season of the summer from weathering your deck and patio enabling you to enjoy it for years to come.
Clean the BBQ grill. Since its summer We can expect to be using this grill a lot for party, gathers and just summer fun. Why not have it cleaned and ready to go before your events even kick off.
Check the batteries in all flashlights. As we are located in Fleming Island, Florida we experience extended power outages especially during the summer months and hurricane season. Might as well start the summer off right by being prepared.
Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Checking the smoke detectors would save our live over and over again. Also it would prevent major property damage.
I hope this list of tips better prepares you for the summer time. Also, if you were planning on selling your home, these are some great ideas and things to consider to make your home more inviting.
